PLOT TWIST
So we had this amazing 2 day shoot set up in Salt lake city that included filming in some people's homes, visiting a Planetarium, Parks on the mountain with a view of the city, and much more. Unfortunately at the last minute we happened to have about half the people or places cancel on us and it was this confusing stressful mess as we tried to decide what to do and whether to go to SLC at all now, but in the end we decided to shuffle things around and condense it to a 1 day filming trip, which left today open, but nothing planned, so we scrambled to find the best use of our time.
SWEET MOMENTS AT HOME
It worked out really well that a family we had wanted to spend some time with, but hadn't been able to work it out yet, was available this morning at little to no notice. We were able to have a peek into their day as they purchased plants from a local nursery, came home and learned about fractions as they measured ingredients for making lemonade together, enjoyed the lemonade at the kitchen table as the children painted while mom read aloud beautiful stories about birds, and then enjoyed some quiet sibling time when the oldest brother read picture books to the younger two. It really was a perfect, peaceful example of homeschooling with young children. It's powerful how a lifetime of small consistent learning moments add up to be exactly what we need. Children learning from each other as well as the parent. Not formal, not rushed, not forced. Just living a life of love, work, and learning together. So perfect.
TEENS LOVE SHAKESPEARE
Later in the afternoon we were able to go to a rehearsal of a Shakespeare play that was being put together by a group of homeschool teenagers (ages 12-15) as part of their Co-op. Spending just a few minutes in a situation like this definitely gets rid of any notion that you might have that homeschoolers don't socialize or act like teenagers. These kids were doing a great job, but also just loved being together laughing and having fun, all while getting a great education from one of humanity's most important writers.
That was it for the day so we prepped for Salt Lake City and took a little bit of much needed rest.
